Are you a romantic at heart? Have all things French always intrigued you, such as the Eiffel Tower, the language, street cafes, wines, cheeses, etc. Below, I’ll help you discover everything on how to relocate to France:

1. If you are an American and plan to visit for 90 days or more for any reason, you need a visa. If you plan to work, even if it’s just for a month, you need one. If you are from a member country of the European Union, you do not need a visa to visit or work.

2. The French Administration is VERY BIG on paperwork and supporting documents. Be sure to take copies of all of your official documents before you relocate to France.

3. Many people move to France because they have a job. If you don’t already have a job when you get to France, and you are from outside the EU, then you will most likely have a “carte de sejour temporaire non-travaille”. This means that no work is allowed. There ARE creative ways to earn a living without a traditional job, however.

4. You can only legally drive with your American driver’s license for one year in France. After that, you must have a French “permis de conduire”. Without it you won’t be able to have car insurance after
the first year.

5. It obviously much easier to survive, adjust, and integrate into French society if you speak French. This is true for both adults and children. Learn at least a few good phrases before you relocate to France.

6. Shopping in France can be interesting and time consuming. Don’t worry about your language ability or lack thereof. Many French people either understand and/or speak a little English and shopkeepers, especially in the Southwest of France, are quite sympathetic and patient with foreigners.

7. In France, banks issue Visa or MasterCard debit cards, not credit cards. You can pay an extra fee to have the debit made on the last day of the month instead of immediately.

After reading these tips, I’m sure you can already imagine yourself sipping a glass of wine while seated at an outdoor caf? Make a plan, mark your calendar, and prepare for your new life as you relocate to France!
